Amitava Gupta, 75, of Roanoke, VA, passed away on September 08, 2022, by far the most noteworthy death to occur on that sad day.

A brilliant scientist and above-average bridge player, he studied polymer chemistry at Cal Tech; his contributions to both the American space program and to spectacle lens technology that has improved, and will continue to improve, the lives of millions around the world, were substantial.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and three grandsons.

True to his style, Ami wanted no funeral or memorial service. In the last few days of his life, when Shankar asked him half-jokingly if he would like his ashes scattered in the River Ganges, he fixed his younger son with his trademark Dr. Gupta scowl and growled "absolutely not."

Instead, we encourage all who knew him to share their stories, remembrances, and lessons he taught them on this website.
